Check out this excellent and hilarious article on Larping from the Closet. And to think I actually use the excuse "going camping"...

I agree wholeheartedly. There's the whole taboo thing about gamers getting together and doing something like LARPing. It's sort of socially looked down upon (which is ironic, because the event is rather social), and damn it, I don't want it to hinder my future career choice. Look, it's not like I don't enjoy LARPing, but let's face it: who wants to be placed under yet another stereotype? I for one am tired of my brother telling me "Good luck with your sausage party in the woods" and my mother smiling placidly whenever the subject is brought up. Even my father, who would seem at least a little passive about the subject, laughs about it and pokes fun at me from time to time, so how am I going to expect a perfect stanger at college to give me the benefit of the doubt about the Realm of the Five?
Basically, all I want to say is that although it shouldn't be this way, I'll keep this little part about myself to myself. Because I know it will be met with a form of discrimination I don't want to deal with. Evermoore is a nice retreat, but the Real World is out there, and I want to keep it separate.
So all I have to say about that article is thanks for telling me something I already knew.

everyone i know, knows i larp (they just might not know what it is). and for our dress up day for halloween, everyone kept thinking i was William Wallace DAMN IT...."I'm Wallace MacBix, Highlander Trooper, Battle Master and Leader of FWAP, soon to be Battle Master of Coup De Grace, saviour of Evermore (okay so i emblished a little at the end, but still)." I'M NOT WILLIAM WALLACE, AND I'M NOT FROM BRAVEHEART. I've never even seen it....

You make me sad on the inside Biczo. Very sad. Anyway, if I want the people I know to find out about my LARPing, then I'll tell them, but otherwise I'd rather not. I'll use the "going camping" or "prior engagement with friends" routine so I don't have to explain it. And it works, on those who try and pry I just tell them that's it. Nothing more. Or if I'm really daring I'll tell them they're being nosy or something, but I won't try to draw attention to myself. Well, regardless, I try and come and when I'm there I have fun, but I will reiterate I don't want to broadcast it to the world. It just isn't me to have something like that heard.

if it makes you feel better wallace, i dressed as my soon to come rakkarin-ranger and everyone thought I was Puss-in-boots. Even though i had pants, a shirt, a vest thing, no hat, and was painted like a cheetah, not a orange house cat >_<

heh, luckily i dont have that problem as most everyone i know is a-ok with gaming in general. although, i will never put on all that gear before the event actually starts, ever again. eating my meatball hoagie at subway was rather hard what with the doublet and all.

I happen to have the luxury of haveing a boss who is the father of a larper so when I asked for the weekend he new why and was cool with it. On the whole though peeps(people) do not understand are quirky hobby at all. This I feel is our worst enemy. Peeps who don't know what it is we are doing out there. I think when peeps ask we tell em what it is exactly. Less ignorence less stress. ;D

Biczo i was not proud of that WaWa thing but we were lost and need directions. And Dennis you feel sad when he walked into class imagine me being with him all day.
Getting on with the subject. When somebody asks me what i'm doing i'll tell them. Besides it is so much easier to tell the truth becuase i get confused when i lie.

Ouch. Sorry Vito, I didn't think about that. Well, I'm sure whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? Well, besides that, I don't want to hear anyone's opinion on the matter up here and I don't plan on it. LARPing is an experience I'd rather not share with people up here. I just see it as a professional courtesy, or to use alliteration, a "collegic courtesy". If someone seems interested and wants to know, I'll tell them, but it's so much easier to just say "camping" or something else. It's a half-truth, and I'm willing to deal with that as long as I don't have to worry about other people's opinion on the matter, because I sure know people here are a little too opinionated for my tastes.
